Mt Saint Helens

This is a 2nd portrayal of the May 18, 1980 eruption of Mt Saint Helens. The day after the eruption, the artist was actually in the area, passing the Tuttle River and unaware of the extensive volcanic dust fallout blanketing the road and air. This work has been exhibited in 16 juried shows and resulted in 5 commissions of like theme and appearance, with some similar pieces exceeding 18-36 feet in length by 4-5 feet in height.

This is an attempt to portray the femininity and universality of women and their respectful rights as participating citizens of a nurturing and embracing world. The piece includes newspaper clippings relative to woman's rights dating from the 1970s.

The female form is interrupted with information graphically demonstrating: emotion, (solar-circle/equinox etc) eternity of creation (triangle - pyramid), solid constitution (tying spine to earth shape) and calculating (numbered triangle).

Distant Hill

Is piece is a portrayal of a distant hill and skyline, seen beyond a cedar tree. The tree, which has succumbed to wind rain and the earth's weather, frames a ravine with a rushing river below.

This depiction of an old barn in Melrose, Oregon was created in earth tones with a #6 and #8 sable brush, and using the sharpened end of the wooden handle to scrape away the paint and highlight the high grass.
