David Lehigh's work seeks to communicate a sense of space, and a perception of time, with an emphasis on perceived events as a continuum in our greater existence— an existence tied to our universe and natural environment. The following pieces include landscapes, space-scapes and human figures in a variety of media.
Umpqua VI
18x26"
mixed media - watercolor, acrylic, india ink, conte
This is an attempt to visualize a landscape as if one would cut through all the different strata and expose water and other mineral issues. This piece qualified me for the Oregon Water Color Society as a member in 1981, they only accepted 28 artists that year.
Euclid IV
28x32"
mixed media - acrylic, india ink
This is an attempt to visualize outer-space as a landscape. Demonstrating nebula formations and currents within inter-galaxy strata and black holes erupting through out a millennia.
Woman II
28x32"
graphite drawing
This drawing from a model was used for the college assignment “Womanhood.” The female form is interrupted with information graphically demonstrating: emotion, (solar-circle/equinox etc) eternity of creation (triangle - pyrimid), solid constitution (tying spine to earth shape) and calculating (numbered triangle).
Spacescape X
22x30"
mixed media - acrylic, india ink
This is an attempt to visualize outer-space as a landscape. Demonstrating nebula formations and currents within inter-galaxy strata and black holes erupting throughout a millennia.
Spacescape XIII
28x12"
mixed media - acrylic, india ink
This is an attempt to visualize outer-space as a Landscape. Demonstrating nebula formations and currents within inter-galaxy strata and black holes erupting amongst erupted debris.
Spacescape VI
18x12"
mixed media - acrylic, india ink
This is an attempt to visualize outer-space as a Landscape. Demonstrating nebula formations and currents within inter-galaxy strata with black holes erupting throughout a millennia.
Woman II
18x22"
mixed media - ink, collage
This is an attempt to portray the feminity and universatatlity of women and their respectful rights as participating citizens of a nurturing and embracing world. newspaper clippings relative to womans rights dating from the 1970’s.
Burnt Mountain
36x38"
oil on panel
This is an attempt to produce an image of the wet and thundering skies above mountains in Douglas County, Oregon demonstrating the different colors and textures of earth strata and of rain as they fragment the landscape.
Earth Shot
48x12"
oil on panel
Is an attempt to conceive earth from a satellite. Using masonite and oil paints to produce an earth-scape siting from an orbital satellite in another galaxy through Nebula currents.
Mt Saint Helens
96x34"
oil on canvas
This is the second attempt to portray Mount Saint Helens erruption May 18th 1980. I actually drove up Interstate 5 in Washington passing the Tuttle River the day after the eruption unaware of the extensive volcanic dust fallout blanketing the road and air. This work has been exhibited in sixteen juried shows and has earned me five commissions of similar theme, ,size in earth tones. I mounted canvas on two separate wooden frames I built and used oil paint to capture the eruption and fallout. 96 “ X 34” on stretched canvas. However, I have produced two other pieces similar exceeding 18 and 36 feet in length / by 4 feet and 5 feet in height.
Distant Hill
36x36" (in two segments)
media
Is an attempt to capture a distant hill and skyline by looking past a cedar tree framing a ravine of a rushing river below. This portrait of a tree has succumbed to wind, rain and earths weather. I build the wooden frames and stretch the canvas after sealing the canvas I treat with underlayment and proceed to create my landscapes with oil paint using earth tones.
Barn IV
size"
media
Is an attempt to capture an old barn in Melrose, Oregon with water color paint on 120 lb water color paper in earth tones with a # 6 and #8 sable brush using the sharpend end of the wooden handle to scrap away the paint to highlight the high grass. 28’ X 14”.
Scotts Mountain
48x22 "
oil on panel
A plein air rendering of Scotts Mountain, Oregon. I attempted to capture the river and mountain strata along with merging hills of perspective distance.
Wet Hills
36x48 "
oil on panel
This Plein Air piece was created as an exercise to capture the wet hills of Oregon showing the evening sky of crisp blue hues against the wet green hills of Spring Time and a river in the middle ground .
Topographic VIII
32x72 "
media
Was created for The State of Oregon demonstrating the differing means of portraying this regions multi use terraine and elevations. Rendered in oil paint on stretched canvas.
Spacescape XII
168x32" (in three segments)
oil on canvas
Was commisioned for Pacific University and is based on the science of Outer-Space in our solar system. Using differing earth tones and blues to capture nebula and vortex currents to demonstrate spatial movement and mass relative to velocity and black hole movements as a foundation to space-scape formations.
Ecosystem II
22x36"
graphite on paper
Was a visual exercise in an attempt to capture our eco-system from water, fish, trees, human and natural formations to demonstrate visually cohesive movement and integration of complex living organisms.
Spacescape XII
120x48"
oil on canvas
Was commisioned for Pacific University and is based on the science of Outer-Space in our solar system. Using differing earth tones and blues to capture nebula and vortex currents to demonstrate spatial movement and mass relative to velocity and black hole movements as a foundation to space-scape formation and voltive velocity.
Woman VII
36x42"
conte on paper
an attempt to show three stages of wonmanhood in a monotone environment.
Man Overcoming Evil
26x32 "
mixed media - ink, watercolor, acrylic paint
I was driving a UPS truck one winter night of 1980 when (at 8 mph on ice) the front wheels hit wet solid ice-cap, the truck with me buckled in slipped off the cliff and into the fridgid North Umpqua River. I was strapped into the seat belt and felt as if I was being held under water by a monster, I survived.
